
In 1887 Cumman Peil Gleann Maghir played Carraig na BhFear in the County Championship and lost on the score of 1-1 to 0-2. During this period, Glanmire GAA was represented in County Competitions by two teams and these teams played at Rathcooney in February of 1887. The Glanmire GAA club continued to promote Gaelic Football and played in the County Championship and in many tournament games in Midleton, Inniscarra, Carrigadrohid, Watergrasshill, Carrigtwohill and in Queenstown.
In the County Championship of 1889 Lees were victorious on the score of 1-5 to 0-1 while the second team lost to Aghada on the score of 4 points to 1 point. Lees also proved superior in the 1890 County Championship recording success on the final score of 3-1 to 0-1. In 1891 Glanmire GAA club and Lees clashed in Cork Park. At half time the City team led by 1-3 to nil, a row developed before the game concluded and the referee, Mr. Russell, decided to finish the game with three minutes remaining. The team were ordered to play the remaining three minutes, but Glanmire did not appear and Lees were awarded the game. During 1892, 1893 and 1894, much sporting activity took place in the Riverstown area (under G.A.A. Rules). In 1895 a Parish match was played in Watergrasshill in which the Glanmire team won on the score of 2-4 to 0-1. In 1896, the team and Lisgoold drew at two points each. In 1897 a tournament game was played in Carrigtwohill in which O'Briens defeated Glanmire second team by 1-2 to 0-2.
In the period from 1929 to 1944 Sarsfield Hurling Club promoted Football in the Riverstown and Glanmire areas and captured six Divisional Junior A Football championship titles (including a County title in 1937) and won 4 East Cork Minor (A) Football Championship titles which included County titles in 1936 and 1937.
Cumann Peil Gleann maghair was reformed in 1945 and since then has achieved great success at Divisional and at County levels. At present the club lead the Roll of Championship offers in East Cork. In Junior 'A' Grade the club have 12 titles (joint leaders with Midleton) from 1946 to 1977 inclusive, 3 titles in Junior 'B' grade (1958, 1963, 1994). At Under 21 'A' Grade 9 titles have been won including three in a row (1972, 73, 74 and 1990, 91, 92), 1 title at Under 21 'B' Grade in 1979, at Minor 'A' Grade 21 titles have been won from 1946 to 1996 inclusive. Included in their great run of success is victory in 1950, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 57, 58, 59, 60, 71, 73, 74, 82, 83, 84, 85. In Minor 'B' Grade 1 title was won in 1981, at County level 2 County 'A' Grade titles were won in 1951 and 1958, and in 1987 the Intermediate County title was won when the team defeated Fermoy.
The Glanmire GAA Club has achieved great League success also in Junior 'A' grade. Two titles were won in 1963 and in 1965, at Minor 'A' Grade 5 titles have been won (1974 to 1996 inclusive) and 1982 the Intermediate teams captured the County League title when they defeated Douglas.
Much success has also been won at Divisional and at County levels by the Glanmire GAA Club's Under 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 teams. |
