Tom Creedon Cup: Glanmire 2 – 7 vs Glanworth 0 – 12

The Intermediate team resumed where they left off in 2011 with an encouraging win against Glanworth.  After a poor start they improved as the game went on and goals by Martin Connolly and Chris Cummins set-up a Round 2 clash with Cill na Martra next Saturday in Buckleary’s cross @ 3pm.

Glanmire Juvenile Football Club has won the December Glanmire & District sports award. The award was presented on Wed 18th Jan at the Vienna Woods Hotel and the club was represented by members of the successful U16 and U14 teams who won County championships to close out 2011 in style.

Tickets will be on sale this Thursday at the Pike or on the door on the night : €15 (Adult) and €8 (Juvenile)

Proud in defeat is how I would describe the feelings after yesterdays 3 point loss to Ballincollig in the U13 Premier 1 County Final. Our lads battled from the 1st minute of this county final against a physically bigger Ballincollig outfit. We got a great start with a goal from Sam Heffernan and points from Shane O’ Driscoll and Sam Heffernan, however we should probably have led by more after dominating the opening 15mins. Unfortunately Ballincollig got on top before half-time and went in leading by 4g 1p to our 1g 2p. Our lads showed the meaning of never giving up and they outscored Ballincollig in the 2nd half by 3g 2p to 7p. Only for a few of our shots going narrowly wide and 2 coming back off the crossbar, the result could have been different. Our U13s continued their recent dominance over Carrigaline with a relatively comfortable win in the U13 Premier 1 semi-final today in Mahon. Unlike the last day against the Barrs, our lads led from the first whistle, completely dominating the first 10-15 minutes after which they led by 1g 5p to no score. By half-time they had extended the lead to 3g 8p to Carrigaline’s 02pts. Our lads continued where they let off after half-time and despite playing the 2nd half against a stiff breeze, they thankfully had this game well and truly wrapped up by the three quarter stage. In a another very good overall team display where everyone worked extremely hard, Aidan Hackett was again extremely sound in goal, with Andrew McCann, Rob Gillivan and Shane Garvey again outstanding in the backs, Cillian O’ Leary continues to dominate at Right half back, Jack O’ Connor, Cormac O’ Leary and Cathal Shine also played extremely well. The night will kick off with a 3 course meal followed by the awards ceremony. As well as medal presentations for all of this year’s successful teams throughout the adult Mens and Ladies sections, there will be various Player of the Year awards handed out on the night. These awards will be chosen by the players on the night and this always ensures great excitement at the end of the awards presentation. These awards will be presented by our special guests and the ceremony will be followed by entertainment and a chance to reminisce on what has been a great year for the club as a whole.

All players and mentors of each team are expected to attend and partners, parents and supporters are more than welcome to join in the festivities for the evening.

After an amazing 2nd half comeback, our u13 footballers advanced to the semi-final of the U13 Premier 1. Trailing by 14pts at half time, our team produced an absolute display of top class football in the 2nd half out scoring St. Finbarrs by 3g 11pts to 02pts in that period. All looked lost at half-time with the Barrs scoring 2g 09pts to our solitary point scored by Shane o’ Driscoll from a free. however after a rousing reading from the gospel of St. John (o’ Connor) at half-time, our lads responded magnificently in the 2nd half, restricting the Barrs to 2 pts. with only 2pts scored from frees in that period, our lads scored 3g 09pts from play and showed a tremenduous spirit and never say die attitude. All players contributed to this super win, but special praise must go to Captain Danny Lonergan, Robert Gillivan, Andrew McCann, Shane Garvey, Sean Higgins, Cillian O’ Leary,Luke McMonagle and Shane O’ Driscoll, sub Andrew O’ Sullivan also made a significant contribution when introduced with 15mins to go.
